L-House in Uluwatu, Bali designed by Budi Pradono / budipradono architects

L-House in Uluwatu, Bali

This residence is situated in a breathtaking area near the Uluwatu cliffs in Bali. This land provides a view of the vast ocean, where we can observe the sunset every evening. With relatively rectangular land and adjacent to several new villas. Architects must be capable of meeting the necessities of this family.

The family is comprised of a couple from two different countries who value Balinese culture and nature. I felt the need to maximize the existence of a very specific site location on the south side of Bali, where the violent waves from the Indian Ocean crashing against the cliff edge were very exotic and combined with the calm horizon where the hot sun abruptly descended and set into the sea. gradually, it became black. The soil in the region of Uluwatu consists primarily of rock and coral, making it simple to attach structures to the rock, but obtaining clean water is extremely difficult.

Introducing the Balinese ethos

I visited the site multiple times to confirm the building's orientation. In close proximity to that location, a beach club is attached to the brink of a cliff, accommodating the violent waves of the ocean while this land is several meters higher. I conducted a composition study of the masses in which I attempted to apply the concept of Dewata Nawasanga or nine heavens, namely the main universe or the nine gods of wind direction, so that the land was divided into nine parts and rotated based on the best orientation and the area in the middle was left empty; the swimming pool was then used as the datum. The complete composition of this mass composition was organized. On the northeast side is a modest place of worship. I want the mass of this building to be composed of multiple mass boxes so that it appears more modern without the use of Balinese ornamentation, but on one side of the west side, the wall will be torn apart to let in a great deal of light. There is a space between the first and second storeys so that air can continue to flow into the basement. We construct a 3 cubic meter water reservoir to assure the availability of water. On the other hand, despite the building's flat mass, we have prepared multiple locations to absorb rainfall, store it, and process it for use.

Respond to post-pandemic living conditions

On the east side, all rooms should receive the morning sun, which contains vitamin D, and all windows can be opened so that we do not need to rely on the air conditioner constantly. The lavatory is designed to be large enough to make us feel as if we are a part of nature, allowing us to appreciate the natural scenery, but potted plants are an integral part of this design. Each corridor will receive adequate sunlight and airflow.

Programming and Architectural Design

The building's layout and massing attempt to interpret the concept of Bali by applying the division of the land into nine primary sections, i.e., by applying the concepts of Tri Angga and Tri Mandala. So the yard or landscape employs the Tri Mandala, specifically the main madhyama as a place for ceremonies and healing, and the second madhyama mandala as the main residence of its inhabitants, which includes a kitchen, dining area, and guest bedroom. Between the main madhyama and the madya, there is a vacant space or void that we interpret as a space for socializing between families, so it serves as a barbeque area. The final concept is madhyama kanista, which was traditionally a stable but is interpreted in this concept as a landscape that supports the whole and is positioned programmatically as a space for hobbies and recreation. While the tri angga concept is a virtual three-dimensional division vertically, namely the main angga or roof, the madhyama angga is a building consisting of pillars and walls, and the kanista angga is the foundation and water storage area, the majority of the foundation is supported by pillars so that almost all of the buildings facing the back are raised off the ground. The study of building mass is conducted with blocks of mass that are piled and arranged to form a composition of interrelated and mutually supporting building masses. Using the mass of the swimming pool as a reference point, the two building masses above it follow the direction / orientation of the pool, with the exception of the mass of the building on the second floor, which crosses in order to create space for a quieter area / meditation area. In the northern portion, which is the healing area, there is a small temple for prayer as well as an area for fitness or yoga. The mass of the building in front contains the service area, kitchen, and parking area. The courtyard, which is used for barbecuing, is located in the middle, followed by the living and dining areas and the guest chamber. On the highest level, there is a penthouse, which is comprised of three chambers with corridors that maximize sunlight. Between the first and second floors, there is a mezzanine floor with an entertainment area for viewing movies and a bar, which is supported by an outdoor area with views of the sea or the sunset.

The building's composition and its mass composition

Using the programming-arrangement strategy and controlling the building's mass results in a composition with a distorted courtyard in the center that can be used for barbecuing. whereas the structures stacked above it on the north were composed of rows of rooms connected by wide corridors. This corridor is also an attractive space with constant access to natural light. The swimming facility extends westward into the ocean. It also serves as an organizer, orchestrating the composition of the entire building mass.

The building bulk for the security and fitness warehouses is separated to the north, despite the fact that all architectural elements are closely related. Exterior and interior elements are comprised of porous stone, while concrete and teak wood are used for the primary doors.

Materiality as a sustaining factor

Due to Uluwatu, Bali's extreme climate, the majority of the territory is dry rock. So that the entire structure of the building is comprised of concrete/concrete material, some portions of the rooftop are coated with pumice to absorb rainwater and deflect the sun's heat. The majority of the building exteriors are clad in natural stone that is abundant in Bali and simple to acquire. Some cladding elements employ ironwood to maintain the resort-like appearance. The landscape uses the wild concept to accommodate the surrounding natural conditions so that it appears more natural, while other tropical plants are strategically placed throughout the building, such as in corridors and bathrooms, as accents but also as a sign and encouragement to get closer to nature.

O park in Bali by Budi Pradono

O - Park is a place where creative thinkers gather, from all around the world. Therefore this place must be particularly conducive to the gathering of various people from various backgrounds who are bound by creativity. As a result, Oreum must create a pleasant environment in which to think, work, and argue, while also balancing sports, yoga, and wellness.

Two options idea

I want to propose two options based on the same fundamental concept, namely how to create a built environment that is very distinct from the environment at home, by creating a courtyard in the middle of the building that represents a new natural tropical forest.

Balinese concept

I want to implement a Balinese-style life balance program by dividing the site into 9 parts and the programming will be comprised of various autonomous yet interconnected pods.

Courtyards

I want to design a courtyard / atrium with a round shape that incorporates tropical forest flora and serves as the focal point for all activities. In addition to the main courtyard, there are numerous more smaller circular courtyards surrounding the main courtyard. The purpose of these additional courtyards is to let natural light into the building.

Form A

There are two shape ideas interpreted in this site. The first is the basic shape of a box combined with a cylinder to form a courtyard. This cylinder is in the middle of the box and is the element that gets the articulation of the wall elements / lines that divide the box leading to the residential building beside it, so that it has a visual relationship. This cylinder is also comprised of a series of louvres that allow natural light to enter each and every space. On the perimeter the entire box is surrounded by concrete fins which will reduce the sun's heat so that the people inside will get thermal comfort.

Form B

The second form is in the form of a starfish in the form of an ocean wave which erodes the box shape into an irregular star shape plus a round shape which subtracts this star shape right at the center so that a courtyard or round atrium is formed in the middle where we can present a tropical forest. A small articulation was also made in the form of a defining line element in the form of a glass / glass block which leads to the neighboring building. This is intended as a defining element and to provide natural lighting into the building. On the entire perimeter of the star wall there are lots of woven fins that will neutralize the sun's heat inside the building.

Respond to the Green Architecture and Sustainability

The main material used is tonnah or beton tanah = soil concrete which is a concrete material that uses a mixture of local soil. The method entails combining the filtered dirt with cement, gravel, sand, or husks in the appropriate proportions. This material is cast in the same way as concrete, this material is similar to ramped-earth where this material can retain heat so that the building feels cooler.

Padel

In order to achieve a look that is consistent with the structure of the main building, the padel that is constructed above the parking lot makes an effort to employ roofing material that is both flat and thin.

Coworking Space

This coworking space is a fluid space located near the atrium area so they can work and study while experiencing the tropical forest. In certain locations, Formal meeting rooms comprised of air-conditioned pods are given in some locations. This area provides not only a place for more casual meetings and conversations, but also casual pods or informal space that may be organized in whatever way that works best for the group at any given time.

Wellness Room, Beauty Spa & Mini Golf

The wellness and beauty spa area is a balancing element which is located on one side of the building but is directly related to the fitness area and mini golf so that they can use the changing room alternately. Users will be able to continue to take in the natural world beyond the walls of the building thanks to the strategic placement of this space.

area

The gym is situated adjacent to the courtyard so that those exercising will feel as though they are in a tropical forest. In addition to holding comprehensive equipment, the facility is arranged so that all equipment leads to the courtyard. On the other hand, there is a space for group activities, such as yoga or aerobics, a training area with broad mirrors, and everything is arranged to facilitate concentration and coordination. We ensure that more natural light can penetrate the space. On the other hand, we provide an outdoor space in the courtyards so that everyone can exercise outside without leaving the building and take advantage of the copious sunlight as a vitamin source.

N-COMMUNITY in Bali by budi Pradono

ARCHITECTURAL CONCEPT

In order to meet the requirements set out by the government, we have divided this area complex into many parts, each of which has a public space or a green open area comprising between 20% and 25% of the total land area.

MASTERPLAN

Based on the idea of the concept that already exists in Bali, this master plan is being made with a general method for growth. A normal Balinese house is always built on land that is divided into nine parts. In the middle of the site is an empty area called a "zen space," which is the main place. All of the other rooms and buildings are set up in a way that makes sense in relation to it. These rooms include the dining room, bedroom, living room, and kitchen.

The special space we called “utamaning utama” that is frequently designated as a venue to worship at each corner on the north side or facing the sea is the corner section of the nine division. As a result, a family temple is typically established in this position.

How to think of ways to use Balinese ideas in modern city life by multiplying  the 9 divisions into several places and making that the direction of how the city is set up.

ORGANIC PUBLIC SPACE

We highlight this vacant area in an urban environment, namely as a public space, as a significant component in the overall layout of the room in this master design that we have created. There are two primary concepts contained within this master plan: The first fundamental concept is organic space, in which the whole region is split up into eight sections. Where each segment has an organic public space that is of a size that is relatively vast (broad), and where the main street and all of these public spaces are connected to one another via the secondary street. Each big public area is connected to one or more smaller public spaces by a branch.

BUILDING HEIGHT

The height of the building is being gradually reduced as it gets closer to the main road, and it is also being shorter overall, with the goal of making it so that people would feel comfortable strolling around it.

While structures with multiple stories (up to a maximum of three levels) are located on the most distant boundary.

PILOTIS STRUCTURE

The primary structure is a pilotis, which gives the building legs and creates more open space on the bottom side of the building, particularly for public areas such as the conference room, as well as the dining room, and the fitness room. The purpose of this is also to ensure that the levels with the more private rooms are located higher up.

ATRIUM

The atrium was the open central court surrounded by enclosed chambers. In Roman atriums contained an impluvium, a shallow basin sunken into the floor to collect rainfall from the roof.

But in this proposal, I envision an atrium as a source of energy for the residents, an inner garden or forest, and a source of light distribution throughout the building.

WATER

Since water is employed as a heat penetration method, reflecting ponds are created in parts of the front side of the area in order to act as a cooler and as area markers. Therefore, there will be a reflecting pond that visitors will see as soon as they reach the neighbourhood.

FORM

1.   AMOEBA

The fundamental form is analogous to that of an amoeba, with a void located in the midst of each amoeba. These atriums serve as a source of green energy for the structure, and they provide the impression to those who are within that they are outside. Additionally, it can act as a natural ventilation system.

This is for the apartment units, which are designed to be extremely simple and take the shape of boxes. The boxes are positioned in such a manner that each apartment unit has its own space for greenery as well as some privacy.

2.   MOUNTAINS

The plan is to create a "what if" scenario in which all of the individual housing units are merged together to form a single amoeba. This amoeba will then connect all of the individual apartment units to one another. Therefore, in terms of shape, this link creates numerous mountains that are connected to each other; the mountains in question contain gaps or atriums inside their confines.

On the slope of the mountain crest, there is an area that has been made more open by installing a row of organic planter boxes, but overall, the area still retains the appearance of a mountain. After the formation of these mountains, this area will be able to be divided into the eight sections that were there previously.

3.   WOODEN LOUVRE

This rectangular box was decided upon as the best form to use because it is both functional and simple. Therefore, the plan is to articulate the composition of the spatial needs into many portions of building clusters, where the composition produces dynamic public spaces.

with irregular sites and curved main roads. One option is to create a formal grid composition by dividing the nine parts of each unit. similar to how Balinese culture does it; in this case, Then, the middle area as an empty public space then we connect it with the road corridor in the form of a ramp where other buildings are around it and are interrelated with one another.the mass composition would be a mass composition of squares that would respond to each other between the solid and the void

Only in public buildings, such as co-working spaces, fitness, and yoga rooms, are rooms designed to have an oval layout with semi-open walls that have planter boxes installed as louvres to allow for cross ventilation.

A wooden louvre system has been installed on the roof of the entire building so that the available sunlight may be used as efficiently as possible for urban farming.

Eco-Friendly Building and Urbanism

We aim to get as much natural light into the buildings as possible and include as much cross ventilation as possible into each structure, so that the overall appearance of this area complex is similar to that of a village in Bali. The planning for this entire area was done using the concepts of green architecture and urbanism.

Walkable community

Each of these areas is designed to be easy to reach and with a green atmosphere everyone in the area will feel comfortable to be able to walk with a maximum target of 5 minutes only.

Material Approach

When it comes to the walls, we can use rammed-earth material as heat insulation, but you can also replace it with other local items such as bricks from Bali. In general, we use local resources by using local artisans for tasks such as roofing or planting.

Cloudy House by Budi Pradono
