Hill City, New Taipei City Museum of Arts by Budi pradono architects 2011


The vision for the contemporary Taipei Museum of Art is
How to intergrate the building with the existing nature of the city ?
How if we create a museum at the same time function as playground for the people ?


How if we create another landscape to integrate within the existing park To maintain the existing pathways and bicycle track ?
How can we attract people, even those who normally would not visit the collections?
How if we combine 5 different tower with undulating landscape, which contains of combination of different programs ?


The aim of the plan is to achieve a highly differentiated accessible neighborhood, which avoids mono functionality and develops a maximum differentiated and lively neighborhood by differentiation in volumes, programs public space, roofscape as new landscape, sizes, entrances, and materials. By combination and the same time separation of different programs, the five different towers become vertical sandwich of the collection.

Which connected each other with different sky bridges. The envelope allows for two-storey high volume, which creates a series of courtyards the maximize light and air into the building. By deforming and lifting these stories maximally a sandwich of landscape can be realized that counterbalance.

It produces a of arches up to 15 meters high creating a large urban grotto. it not only creates better views from the building under and over the adjacent building and towards the surroundings, but also creates a new connectivity between the people who visit the museum and the people who want to play in the park.

It allows for semi public roof the because of this bending act can be describe as sequence of slopes and hills.

By lifting part of the building in the air, the area under the building will be a shaded plaza. under the programmatic roof, plays dance performance and concerts can be held.


At the same time the museum will be more present and visible, seen from all around the park.

The manipulation of the roof can cause diversification, separation or unity. this undulation allows for the positioning the communal element of the program such as restaurant, children playground, and urban plaza.


The shallowness of the roof also allows for public access to use the roof as a new attraction of contemporary hill in the city.











Temporary Pavilion Structures (1)


The Temporary Pavilion by Matthias Loebermann


Temporary pavilion used as a meeting place for athletes and media space and press to come to after their competition. At the ski competition, it was obviously the winter and structures often covered with snow.


As the pavilion was built only a tie rod, rope and pallets, demolition and recycling structures simple enough after the competition finished. Loeberman pallets used to encourage people to look at common items in a new light as a building material back in 2005, is still a relatively new concept for most people.

It was made entirely from 1300 shipping pallets and held together with tie rods and pull straps. The pavillion was used as a meeting place and media room for the athletes competing in the championship.

Apparently they dismantled and recycled the structure after the event, however I think this would be a pretty amazing permanent structure if it could survive in a particular climate without any major damage.

Back in 2005, Matthias Loebermann while building a beautiful pavilion out of shipping pallets reclamation for the Nordic Ski Alpine World Championship in Oberstdorf, Germany.

Shipping pallets are found all over the world and makes for a sturdy building materials at low cost, which explains the remarkable resurrection Palletecture projects lately.

Temporary Pavilion [C] Space in London


Designed in collaboration with Alan Demsey , [C]Space is the winning entry in the AADRL10 Pavilion Competition. It is an advanced technology concrete structure that was erected in Bedford Square London in March 2008 to commemorate the 10 year anniversary of the Design Research Laboratory Graduate Design Program at the Architectural Association.

The pavilion is formed by a discontinuous shell structure spanning over 10m made of thin fibre reinforced concrete elements which perform as structure and skin, floor walls and furniture. The concrete is manufactured by the Austrian company Rieder, and the design of the pavilion takes the material to new technical limits, which required extensive prototyping and material testing during the design development process.

The jointing of discrete concrete profiles exploits the tensile strength of Fibre-C and a simple intersecting notch joint which is locked together using a bespoke rubber gasket assembly. The angle of intersection at each joint continuously varies across the structure.


The entire design process was conducted using 3D digital and physical modelling, and the design development was completed using rigorous constraint modelling and scripting to control over 850 individually different profiles and 2000 joints. Finally, the elements were manufactured directly from digital models on CNC cutting equipment.

The winning design was chosen anonymously from 28 entries by invited jurors and was selected based on the following points: constructability within a tight schedule and budget, simplicity and elegant form, effective use of material, and a pavilion as a continuous extension of furniture to roof structure.

The striking presence of the pavilion invites inspection from a distance and upon closer interaction reveals its ambiguity through the merging of sinuous curves, structural performance, and programmatic functions into a single continuous form. Fibre-C elements perform as structure and skin, floor, walls and furniture.

As you move around, the surface varies from opaque to transparent, producing a stunning three-dimensional moiré. The surface encloses while also providing a route through for passing pedestrians. It has neither inside nor outside.

The jointing system in the pavilion exploits the high tensile strength of Fibre-C using a simple interlocking cross joint which is tightened by slightly bending each element as it is locked into consecutive cross elements.


Consultation with the Fibre-C technical department in Austria has suggested that a flex of 15-20mm per metre can be applied without affecting the structural performance of the material. The appearance of small micro cracks on the surface is mitigated by using lighter material colours and a Ferro finish. The pavilion is fabricated from curved profiles that are nested on standard 13mm flat sheets and water cut. Once delivered to site the entire pavillion can be constructed by hand.

O-STRIP Pavilion by Tongji University Team

The architectural design approach is based on the analysis of the relationship between buildings and outdoor space. This relationship led to the conclusion that the large trees in the area is extremely dominant to create organic and dynamic spaces.


On the location site there is a profound difference between outdoor spaces on the northern side of the lot formed by the presence of large trees on the southern side while stretching the field of agricultural areas. This indication became the basic idea to define new public space we will create.


The building form is the result of the studies on a single definition of the scale of new buildings are an integral that part of this region.
The building is trying to respond to the existing Town hall on the west side, as well as some Provide public space facing south and north with a variety of quality, solid-void scale and size relationship is to be maintained in order to have a historical relationship with outdoor space in the entire region.

The building facing the street is made as simple as possible to follow the line of the road. On the northern west side of the outermost layer is the rectangular space as a children's playground adjacent to the Town Hall. On the the southern side of the building consists of three outdoor spaces the which have different size and quality of organic outdoor space That serves as a plaza and tennis court, the which are only separated by wooden decks.

On the west side of the building there is an outdoor space, provided as a transitional space the between the apartment and the Town hall. The building is also slightly curved like a hill. This provides an opportunity for the plaza at the rear side is easily accessible to the public.

With the front façade setback was enough to give Affirmation to the new Typology of apartment building, with Several layers of public space. From the outer side of a children's playground and Planted trees transitional space, the apartment building as the next layer, then associated with the outer plaza and terrace overlooking the tennis courts the vast expanse of farm fields.

Façade provides privacy for the occupants of the apartment, with louvers That form side of the mountain silhouette is visible only inside the Ninety-degree position. This causes that the vehicle or person passes in front of building can not see the inside of this apartment. Vice versa for apartment dwellers can not simply look out toward the street.

The shape of this building as a whole tends to be very simple to follow the macro analysis. Rear side façade consists of glass the width as wide in order to Provide the experience of seeing the green fields of agriculture for a living in this apartment. The entire roof is made roof garden in an effort to expand the green area while creating a new public space on the roof the which can also be interpreted as a contemporary green hills. It serves as an additional layer that helps system cooling buildings in summer. And retain Warmth in the apartment this winter.

The building is made elderly friendly and easy for young children. That connects with the ramp outside the side of the building into another ramps on the corridor to facilitate the circulation throughout the building. The elevator has been provided on the east and center of the building.
